On my spiritual journey I found that the easiest way to remain consistent and intentional in studying God and His Word, is in finding simple and realistic ways to do so. Not all of us are certified theologians, so the bible can be very daunting to a new believer or even a seasoned Christian who just struggles to resonate with its content.
Through my time learning God’s Word, I stumbled upon a method that really helped me unpack and understand the bible in a practical way. I would like to share that with you today, and hopefully this method will motivate and encourage you to delve deeper and learn more about God and what He is trying to teach us.
What is SOAP?
SOAP is a simple method for reading and applying God’s word to our lives.
The word “SOAP” is an acronym which stand for Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer. Using these four key terms we will teach you what each of them mean and how to apply them in your time in God’s Word.
- Scripture: Read a short Bible passage out loud and/or write it out.
- Observation: What do you notice about the verses? What do you think the main message is? What verses, words or ideas jump out to you?
- Application :Ask God how he wants you to apply the verse to your own life.
- Prayer :Pray for yourself and/or for others.

Why Soap
The SOAP method is designed to be a simple yet effective way to deepen one’s understanding of the Bible and connect with God daily. This method allows you to dive deeper into God’s Word and see more than just a glimpse of scripture. The SOAP method can take as little as 15 minutes or as long as you need.
